This extraordinarily impressive S-chair model 275r was designed by Verner Panton for Thonet in 1956 only to see the light of day ten years later. The technology to take this chair into production was simply not sufficient at the time. Gerrit Rietveld had already tried to make his Zig-Zag chair from a single piece of material much earlier in 1932. German author and expert on Panton's oeuvre, Mathias Remele, notes that the idea may have arisen after Panton's collaboration with August Sommer. A German company specializing in bent laminated wood that had produced its Barboy in 1963. The Thonet brothers finally took up the challenge and produced two versions of this chair. Model 275 and 276 respectively with a round backrest.

The chair consists of no fewer than sixteen layers of glued, bent, and pressed rounded veneer. The finish is truly sublime and it has acquired a beautiful patina over the years. As soon as light falls on the attractive shapes, a true spectacle begins to play which we could classify as chiaroscuro. The shadow works towards the light, as it were, from the bottom of the foot up to the hips of the seat. The shoulders of the backrest point straight up and we see the same shapes at the foot. This is rounded inwards so that you do not have to put your feet on the bottom plate. With this chair, you not only have an incredibly charming and challenging item in your home, but also an art object that is included in various collections of museums all over the world. The chair is in good vintage condition.
